Expressionism: Part 2: Artist to look up: Van Gogh

August 15, 2018

Arguably the most famous artist in the world, I think I can safely say that we've all seen some of his work before.

There are countless websites and books out there about his life and work, but I really like this one, it's very thorough and easy to navigate:

I lived in Amsterdam for a year, and there was no escaping his work, as he and the city are inextricably linked. His paintings have been reproduced on so many things - from napkins to bookmarks to scarves:

It can be easy to get nonchalant about his work but this can soon be remedied by visiting the Van Gogh museum and looking at his work up close.

There is an amazing website that show his work up close, click here:

Here are some examples of the paintings and their close-ups. This will give you an idea of the amount of paint on the canvas and the power of the strokes:

This is the painting "The Starry Night":

And then an up close look at it:

This painting inspired the Don McLean song 'Starry Starry night':

If you're ever in Amsterdam check out this website which details all the locations Van Gogh frequented while he was there, click on the image below to access the website:
